This month, three Dutch infrastructure companies will put Europe’s first fully electric large asphalt pavers into operation. Never before have electric asphalt pavers of this size been delivered directly from the factory.
The infrastructure companies Mourik, Van Gelder and Heijmans will deploy the machines. The machines are being built and supplied by Dynapac in cooperation with the importer Van der Spek from Vianen. The delivery of three machines, one for each construction company, marks an important step in making the Dutch infrastructure sector more sustainable.
These machines are the largest possible variant of highway pavers with a laying capacity of 800 t/h and can be used for resurfacing highways. Smaller electric models, such as the electric City Paver SD1800W e designed for urban road applications, had already been available as factory-built solutions. This machine can be deployed in the major replacement and renovation projects within Dutch infrastructure, whose maintenance backlog was recently estimated at a total of €34.5 billion.
In-house conversions
Unlike previous solutions, where diesel-powered machines were retrofitted into electric versions by third parties, this highway paver is the first to be purpose-built and engineered from scratch as a fully electric machine itself.
This makes scaling up zero-emission equipment significantly easier. By the end of 2026, the machine will also become available to other companies.
A machine can operate on battery power for eight to ten hours, effectively a full working day with one charge of the 294 kWh Battery. Recharging takes 40 minutes charging time via DC. The SD25 80C e can be charged by AC and DC standard chargers and additionally by Marechal for flexible recharging with standard jobsite supply. The paver has an overall energy efficiency of 65% due to 5 Electric Drives.
Importance for the Netherlands
Asphalt plays an important role in Dutch infrastructure. It forms the foundation for roads, airport runways and taxiways, and contributes to strengthening dikes. As such, asphalt is of major importance for the accessibility, safety and economic continuity of the Netherlands.
The use of electric asphalt pavers directly contributes to reducing emissions such as nitrogen oxides and CO₂. In addition, this development reduces dependence on expensive fossil fuels such as diesel. This aligns with the broader ambition of all participating companies to provide environmentally friendly solutions.
Joint Development
The development of the electric asphalt paver is the result of intensive cooperation between clients, supplier and manufacturer. In January 2024, the five companies decided to collaborate. In March of that year, Heijmans, Mourik and Van Gelder jointly commissioned the factory development of the machine. In April 2025, the prototype was presented at BAUMA in Munich, after which extensive field tests and evaluations followed during the second half of 2025.
